| Sept 24: Convergence: government stirs |
The words and pictures business just got more complicated. NZPA ran a story today telling how the government is moving to 'plug loopholes which have opened up in media regulation as broadcast. telecommunications and internet technologies converge'.
Print doesn't get a mention. Yet underlying the issue is the regulatory split between print media's Press Council and audio-visual's Broadcasting Standards Authority. People have been banging on for years about combining the two, which do, essentially, the same job.
If they'd managed to get their act together then the one body would be a major player in how government will approach its dealings with new media and the implications for the radio and television siblings.
Now we have broadcasting minister T Mallard talking about future-proofing a regulatory regime, whatever that means. I think this will run and run.
